We are looking for a Honorary Treasurer with bookkeeping and management accounting experience.

WHAT WE NEED
Our turnover is in the region of £350k p/a with multiple income streams, including a shop and a café in the hospital.  We need a good all-rounder who can take on the following tasks:
  • Assist/oversee the bookkeeper with bookkeeping, invoice processing and routine accounting functions
  • Production and presentation of quarterly management accounts in collaboration with the Bookkeeper
  • Maintain and update financial records in database including subscriptions, donations, legacies and events.
  • Payroll for two part time members of staff
  • Quarterly VAT and Gift Aid returns
  • Preparation of figures and production of audited Annual Report and Accounts
  • Work with bookkeeper to ensure legal and Charities Commission compliance

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
You should be an experienced, proactive accountant with strong Excel and bookkeeping skills. You will ideally have worked in the charity sector and have an excellent understanding of charity accounts, VAT and Gift Aid.  You will have experience of Audits as well as manual and automated systems.  You should be familiar with Xero or similar accounting systems and should be computer literate in Microsoft 365. You should also be willing and able to pick up and learn to use our database system using the training modules and remote learning facilities offered by the provider.  You will have a recognised accountancy accreditation/qualification. You will be appointed a Trustee of the Charity for the duration of your tenure.

WHERE WOULD YOU BE BASED?
The Friends' office is situated in the Royal Marsden Hospital in Chelsea but much of your time will be spent working remotely.

TIME COMMITMENT
You might be retired or working part time and willing to give the equivalent of up to/around 3-4 days per month (flexible) either in or out of the office.  You would be expected to attend all the Committee meetings (eight per year) and provide management accounts and a financial report at four of them. The meetings usually last around two hours and are held in the hospital. You would work closely alongside the volunteer bookkeeper and Co-Chairs as well as the two secretaries who job-share.  You would also be expected to attend, and present at, Trustee meetings each of which last around an hour (two or three times per year).

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?
You’ll never be bored. The work is very varied and you will be contributing to the continued success story of an award winning charity. You will have the opportunity to make a real difference to the experience of patients, their carers and staff in a world class hospital. You will have the chance to use your accounting skills and work closely with everyone involved at the charity. If this sounds like you- please apply NOW.  We are a friendly, dynamic, dedicated team with tons of energy and a lot of drive.  Come and join us to really make a difference in this amazing hospital.

About the Friends
Since 1935, the Friends has been offering support to The Royal Marsden Hospital and in 2019, was proud to be given the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.  We are primarily a volunteer charity with around 150 volunteers who, prior to Covid when services had to be curtailed, gave some 20,000 hours of their time each year to the hospital.
In addition to running the volunteers, the Friends also raises and donates between £200-£250k every year to fund equipment, services, and amenities for the benefit of patients, their carers and staff.
The Friends receives no government or external funding and relies solely on volunteers  to run the  Charity (except for two part-time paid employees who job-share as secretarial support ). Everything from running the café, shop, volunteer rotas, buying, resourcing, marketing, communications, PR, Social Media, Database management and hospital liaison is managed solely by volunteers so anyone joining the team really does have the opportunity to  get involved and really make a difference.
