Bridge Event 2024
18th-24th November, 2024
In 2024 we have raised over £16k at the Bridge Event and the Friends are able to purchase two Alinity I-stat Creatinine Devices for the Radiography department.
Scott Robertson, MRI Lead Radiographer, requested the purchase of two Alinity I-Stat devices and associated equipment to be able to undertake rapid analysis of a patients renal function from a blood sample. This includes the purchase of the device, charging station and QA equipment. We require one device for each of the two MRI areas on the Chelsea site. The need for a recent renal function test result helps the department to comply with our own policies, as well as national and European guidance regarding the safety of using MRI contrast.
By using up to date blood results, we can ensure that patients are safe to receive MRI contrast. Using the Alinity I-stat allows us to do this faster (within 5 minutes) to minimise delays to the patient process and helps ensure they are scanned at their appointment time. This way of doing the test is cheaper and faster than the alternative option which is to send the sample to hospital laboratory which can take around 1 hour.”
The Friends will liaise with The Marsden, Chelsea in the procurement of these two items.

In 2023 we raised over £16k at the Bridge Event and the Friends were able to purchase a Gamma Probe for the Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT department at The Royal Marsden, Chelsea.
The Nuclear Medicine Department performs sentinel node imaging for patients with melanomas, squamous cell carcinomas (head and neck) and vulval carcinoma's, in order to indentify the lymph nodes to which the cancer might have spread. This is an essential step in the patient's disease assessment and management. As part of this sentinel node imaging, the Nuclear Medicine Technologist uses the Gamma Probe to mark the precise location of the sentinel node on the patient's skin. Surgeons often find it difficult to locate tissues, such as tumors, parathyroid glands, and lymph nodes, within the human body. Proper use of the Gamma Probe allows the surgeon to make a smaller incision and have greater confidence that exploration was successful, and the tissues of interest have been located. This benefits the patient by enabling more accurate disease staging and also decreases occupational radiation impact for the Technologist.

Janie Gill
Janie has been volunteering with the Friends of the Royal Marsden, Chelsea for over eight years helping to run the cafe, and more recently the shop, which she has helped to keep open during much of lockdown.. Janie's passion in life is the game of bridge. Not only does she play, but she has become a brilliant teacher, as some of you will know. Her patience, and ability to explain this complex and exciting game in a clear and logical way is one of her main attributes, and she always makes the lessons challenging but fun. Due to her connection with the Friends Janie has kindly offered to support both Zeb and the Friends to make this a wonderful bridge experience.
