BOOK KEEPER wanted urgently
Friends of The Royal Marsden, Chelsea is a voluntary organisation which, through a combination of fundraising, subscriptions, donations and legacies supports the work of the hospital. The Friends contributes to the provision of facilities and equipment to enhance the health, welfare and comfort of patients and staff. It provides around 200 volunteers who assist around the hospital on a weekly basis in various departments.
With the exception of Secretarial Support, all roles at the Friends are voluntary, including the Chairs, Committee and Treasurer.
What will you be doing?
As bookkeeper for a busy charity with a turnover of around £350k p/a and multiple income streams, you will be expected to collaborate closely with the Treasurer to ensure compliance in all aspects of finance.
Most of the charity income is from subscriptions, donations, fundraising and legacies as well as from the profits raised by the Cafe and Shop in the hospital. Every year, the Charity donates £200k-£250k to the hospital for the purchase of equipment, services and amenities to benefit patients, their carers and staff.
Our turnover is in the region of £350k p/a with multiple income streams, including a shop and a café in the hospital. We need a good all-rounder who can take on the following tasks:
What are we looking for?
You should be an experienced bookkeeper with strong Excel and accounting software skills. You will ideally have worked in the charity sector and have some understanding of charity accounts, VAT and Gift Aid. Ideally, you will have a recognised accountancy accreditation/qualification or be working towards one. In addition, you would need to have the following skills:
What difference will you make?
For over 85 years, the Friends has been offering support to The Royal Marsden Hospital and this year, was proud to be given the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. We are primarily a volunteer charity with around 200 volunteers who give some 20,000 hours of their time each year to the hospital.
In addition to running the volunteers, the Friends also raises and donates between £200-£250k every year to fund equipment, services, and amenities for the benefit of patients, their carers and staff. Managing the finances is central to good management of the Charity and the role would involve close collaboration with the Treasurer, the Committee, and the Trustees.
The Friends receives no government or external funding and relies solely on volunteers (except for one part-time paid employee who works as secretarial support for the Charity). Everything from running the café, shop, volunteer rotas, buying, resourcing, marketing, communications, PR, Social Media, Database management and hospital liaison is managed solely by volunteers so anyone joining the team really would have the opportunity to make a difference.
What's in it for you?
You might be retired or working part time and willing to give the equivalent of around 1-2 days of your time per week (flexible) either in or out of the office. Monthly, quarterly and year end reporting will require additional time, but hours are very flexible. The Treasurer will be available to train you in our systems and in the procedures and to provide ongoing assistance/supervision. You will have the opportunity to work closely alongside a friendly, energetic, dynamic team of fellow volunteers.
